Tesla Battery Replacement Cost

How Much Does a Tesla High Voltage Battery Replacement Cost?

Teslas have two types of onboard “batteries”: storage devices for chemical energy.

  1. A low voltage battery like cars have had forever, to manage everything besides the big electrical drivetrain components. This battery ranges from 12-48 volts, depending on the Tesla model and its equipment, and weighs between 10-30 pounds.
  2. A high voltage battery pack that essentially replaces the gas tank, powering all propulsion between recharges. This battery ranges from 350-800 volts and approximately 965-1200 pounds.

This article covers costs to replace #2, the high voltage battery.

Everybody knows high voltage batteries are expensive. How much are the ones for Teslas?

Currently Earthling Automotive quotes and sources high voltage (HV) batteries directly from Tesla. We have had luck with used HV batteries in the past, on other makes of cars, but do not have a ready source for these on Teslas as of yet.

(Typically used batteries are sourced from crashed cars, and you have to be very careful that the HV battery was not damaged in the collision. Vehicle dismantlers will surely get more savvy about selling Tesla HV batteries as the demand goes up, as they have with Prius batteries in the past.)

Therefore the cost of parts is based on whatever the current price happens to be from Tesla.

As of May 2025, the prices for the parts were approximately:

Model S, Gen 1

  • Gen 1 includes 60kWh capacity and A1 and A2 battery types
  • HV battery type S2 (Feb 2012 – Mar 2016): $13,000
  • HV battery type 90L (April 2016 – Jan 2021): $18,000

Model S and X, Gen 1, April 2016 – Jan 2021

  • HV battery type 90 kWh: $18,000
  • HV battery type 100 kWh: $19,000

Model 3, Gen 1, June 2017 – Dec 2023

  • HV battery type E1 RWD: $11,250
  • HV battery type E2 RWD: $12,000
  • HV battery type E3 AWD: $15,750

Model Y (performance/non-performance)

  • $15,750

Installation cost for the HV battery also varies depending on the Tesla model and whether the vehicle is rear wheel or all wheel drive:

Model S, Gen 1

  • RWD, $800
  • AWD, $800

Model S and X, Gen 1, April 2016 – Jan 2021

  • AWD, $1500

Model 3, Gen 1, June 2017 – Dec 2023

  • RWD: $1350
  • AWD: $1500

Model Y

  • Non-structural pack: $1500
  • Structural pack: $2000

Overall, with San Francisco sales tax on parts (8.75%), Tesla HV battery replacement will range between $14,000-$22,000.
